Our school

Barrett Adolescent Centre Special School can cater for up to 16 students, depending on the nature of their mental health needs. Students attend school from 9.30am to 2.30pm Monday to Thursday and 9:30am to midday on Friday. Added to this are students who access the school on an outreach basis at their home, at their presenting school or at other settings.

The school offers classes for all students aged between 12 and 18. Core classes include literacy, numeracy, science and history with these being complemented by sessions in art, drama, music, home economics and horticulture. The pedagogy of the school focuses on relational teaching to maximise social, emotional, and life skills. Our community programs include outings to movies, gyms, restaurants, art galleries, volunteering and work sampling. Each term the school conducts special event days which are planned and executed by the students. Indicative of these are Murder Mystery Days, Survivor Days, Christmas in July parties and concerts.

There has been a strong move in the curriculum to educate students in the principles of a healthy lifestyle. The focus in health and physical education and home economics has been on nutritious eating and daily exercise starting from the level the students are at and raising their fitness levels over time. Gardens have been developed and  this will help to involve students in kitchen garden principles - growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing of the food we grow, as well as the ideas of sustainability. Each student has an individual Personal Education Plan which is tailored to their needs across the curriculum and which includes caring for the physical, psychological and social aspects of each student.

Parents and caregivers are involved in planning the students’ journey. They are given comprehensive reports of the students’ progress weekly and at the end of each semester and are encouraged to have significant input into the formulation of personal educational plans.
